Harry Patch, the last survivor of Paschendale, has been awarded the French Legion of Honour. BBC covered it on the local news in Somerset:

Caught that on News 24 today - out of interest, have the Belgians also decorated him, considering most of his service was at Ypres?

I believe he was awarded the Knight of the Order of Leopold last year, which is Belgium's highest honour.

Thanks - that could explain one of the medals in the photo of him that I didn't recognise.

Here are a couple of photos from Harry's 110th birthday party in June 2008 when he was awarded the Knight of the Order of Leopold by the Belgian Ambassador (whose name escapes me at present - apologies). It was a great day and Harry was very touched by the gesture and honour given him by the King of the Belgians.

regards,
Jeremy

I wish! Mine were awful of that day. I am a real 'point and shoot' photographer and would be delighted with these. The pics above were taken by a local photographer who was happy to share them with all present. I suppose I should say that they are his copyright. Can't for the life of me remember his name though...

No worries - they are just excellent photos. I was going to congratulate you, especially the second one.

What fantastic pics Jeremy!

I agree with Paul. They are superb!

Give Harry mine and Milena's Best wishes please mate! His letter to me amazes our visitors and guests who see it framed on my Guest House wall.

Nice one Jeremy.

You really are are a privilaged man to share Harry's life so closely yet you offer so much dignity. That day spent with you, the wounded Rifles soldiers from Iraq and Harry on the banks of the Steenbeek will stay with me for ever more!

Best wishes.

Chris.

PS. I will be in touch with you, Peter and Paul soon ref a very important invitation! Now if Harry can can attend likewise, what a gathering that will be! :o ;)
