Hi Paul,

I have been wracking my memory on this one, but isnt there a Padre buried in Wimereux whose epitaph reads something along the lines of " Mortally wounded whilst visiting his men on the Menin Road."?

He's an Imperial War Graves Commission gardener who died in the 1920s, who had served as a CQMS in 22nd Northumberland Fusiliers and had been wounded and discharged.

many thanks for that.

Iain

There are 2 sky pilots in there as far as I can see... both Chaplain 4th class.

They're Revs Acton and Kirk (Acton died in Nov 1917, Kirk in April 1918.)

I think Acton's (attached) battalion was in the vicinity of Zillebeke Lake at the time of his death so I suppose it could be him (probably wrong though!)

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden,
Einen bessern findst du nit.
Die Trommel schlug zum Streite,
Er ging an meiner Seite
In gleichem Schritt und Tritt.

Eine Kugel kam geflogen:
Gilt's mir oder gilt es dir?
Ihn hat es weggerissen,
Er liegt vor meinen Füßen
Als wär's ein Stück von mir

Will mir die Hand noch reichen,
Derweil ich eben lad'.
"Kann dir die Hand nicht geben,
Bleib du im ew'gen Leben
Mein guter Kamerad!"

Thanks Dave,

Im thinking it was Acton from memory. It gives me an excuse to pop down there later in the quieter part of the year to double check :P
